DayTripping to Bethlehem, PA

Bethlehem, PA – Saturday August 11, 2018

It has been a very wet summer here in Pa. We have adjusted to the never-ending bad hair days, wet dog smell and intermittent sun glare. This past weekend was no exception. Dave and I decided to head out to Bethlehem and Musikfest armed with umbrellas and hope for the best! As we passed Hellertown and The Lost River Canyons (fun stop) the sun came out as we passed over the Lehigh River to the Southside. The SteelStacks, Sands Casino, ArtsQuest and new National Museum of Industrial History are all signs of successful planning and commitment. We toured the trestle, listened to Proud Mary and then took the shuttle bus to the Northside. The downtown district is home to historic residencies, beautiful churches, Moravian College, the oldest bookstore in America (second oldest in the world), Hotel Bethlehem and a working blacksmith shop (3hr classes are available-who’s in with me?). During Musikfest the streets are shut down, stages (they call them platz) are set up and music is everywhere! We didn’t get to see the lights on the steelstacks but have heard they are beautiful!  I wanted to see where peeps are made so we stopped by the factory on our way home. They don’t offer factory tours but do have a giant peep on top of a yellow vw bug. We would absolutely encourage you to take a day trip to Bethlehem (either during musikfest, Christmas or anyday you want to do something different- but get there early there is A LOT to see!

Bethlehem has been successfully reinventing itself for many years and it is a joy to see a city thriving while thinking outside the box.
